Sleeping has never been a bedfellow of mine. As a child I used to envy my sister Christine who could sleep through the morning. Sometimes into the afternoon. ”The early bird catches the worm” or “the best part of the day” are in those categories of phrases that have been dreamt up to make people who are thoroughly pissed off about a situation somehow feel better. The “best part of the day” is late evening at a friend’s house when the banter is flowing, not six o’clock the following morning, sitting in the lounge in a tiger suit with only a guinea pig for company. A flight home is a great time to reflect on what has been. For the remaining passengers on KL 571 it is a great time to sleep. Not I. My love of a reflection, particularly my own, is well known. So the lights are out, the cabin is asleep except for me. My little iPhone screen the sole beam of light. For the first time this week not attracting flies. A reflection on KLM. Keep flying! I hurt. My feet hurt. I have a blister the size of Wales (I feel sorry for Wales, it is perfectly sized to convey exactly how severe a disaster is; “an area the size of Wales is on fire” or “the flood covered an area the size of Wales”. Wales is disaster sized.)

Today was a remarkable day. 27 set off at midnight. 27 reached the crater rim by 8 am. A remarkable achievement.
We started to prepare for the climb at 11pm on Monday night. We had breakfast in the mess tent, which was a subdued affair. We were all dressed in as many layers as we could manage without cutting off circulation, sitting eating porridge with our head torches on. Except Gavin, who lost his. We hunted high and low eventually discovering it on Karen’s head along with hers. The mood lightened. Summit Night continues here…
